Driving in Bulgaria

Eastern Europe · Drive on the right

💡 Local Driving Tips

  • Purchase the e-vignette before entering a motorway — cameras check plates automatically and fines are immediate.
  • Road conditions vary widely — motorways are generally good, but rural roads can be rough with potholes.
  • Animal crossings are common on rural roads, especially at night — drive carefully.
  • Sofia traffic can be heavy — use the metro and avoid driving in the city centre.
  • When emergency vehicles approach, pull to the right and stop. On motorways, form a central emergency corridor — left lane to the left, all other lanes to the right.

🪧 Road Signs to Know

While most European road signs follow international standards, these are the signs you are most likely to encounter — and the ones that catch tourists off guard.

Must-Know Signs

🟦
Vineta (Vignette Required Sign)
Blue sign indicating a vignette-controlled motorway begins. Your vehicle plate must be registered with a valid e-vignette before passing this point.
🛑
Стоп (Stop)
Octagonal red stop sign — full stop required. Enforce at rural junctions where the main road is not obvious.
⬇️
Дайте предимство (Give Way)
Standard inverted red triangle. Used at T-junctions throughout Bulgaria, particularly on national and regional roads.
🚫
Влизането забранено (No Entry)
Red circle with white bar. Common at one-way streets in Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna.
⚠️
Опасен завой (Dangerous Bend)
Red triangle with curved arrow — sharp bend ahead. Very common on Rhodope and Balkan mountain roads. Slow down significantly — these signs understate the actual hazard.

Country-Specific Signs

🐄
Добитък по пътя (Livestock on Road)
Animal warning signs are common on Bulgarian rural roads. Sheep, cows, and horses frequently cross — especially in mountain regions and on the Black Sea coast.
💰
Toll collection points on some national roads
Some Bulgarian mountain roads have toll collection points separate from the vignette. The Vitinya Pass on the A2 motorway approach has sections with separate charges.
🅿️
Синя зона (Blue Zone)
Paid or time-limited parking in Sofia and other cities. Pay by app or SMS. Sofia uses a zone-based system with different prices per area.

Camera Types in Bulgaria

Fine Details

Speed enforcement has increased significantly in Bulgaria. Police checkpoints are very common on the Trakia motorway (A1) and Black Sea routes in summer. Foreign drivers may be required to pay fines on the spot.

🅿️ Parking Signs & Zones

Understanding parking zones and road markings can save you a fine or a tow. Here is what each colour and sign means in Bulgaria.

Parking Zones Explained

Синя зона (Blue Zone)

Paid parking throughout Sofia and major city centres. Pay via the Sofia Parking app, SMS, or at ticket machines. Register your licence plate number when paying.

Зелена зона (Green Zone)

Cheaper paid parking zone in Sofia's outer centre. Same payment methods as Blue Zone but lower hourly rate.

Road Line Colours

Yellow road markings or kerb No parking or no stopping
Blue zone signs Paid parking — pay before leaving the car

💡 Local tip: Sofia's city centre has a well-organised paid parking system but spaces fill quickly. Use underground car parks near Vitosha Boulevard and NDK (National Palace of Culture) for reliable parking. In Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas, street parking is generally easier and cheaper.
