Driving in Croatia

Southern Europe · Drive on the right

๐Ÿ’ก Local Driving Tips

  • โ†’Dubrovnik has a day-tripper vehicle limit in summer โ€” arrive early or park outside and walk/take bus.
  • โ†’Coastal roads like the Adriatic Highway are stunning but narrow and winding โ€” allow extra travel time.
  • โ†’Headlights must be on at all times year-round.
  • โ†’Parking in Dubrovnik old town vicinity is extremely difficult in peak summer.
  • โ†’Pull to the right and stop for emergency vehicles. On motorways, form a central corridor โ€” left lane moves left, all others move right. This is required by Croatian traffic law.

โšก EV & Environmental Zones
Speed differences No EV-specific speed limit differences in Croatia. All vehicles follow the same limits including the year-round daytime headlight requirement.
Environmental zones Croatia does not currently operate formal low emission zones. Dubrovnik and Split are developing vehicle access restrictions for the old towns but these are not EV-specific โ€” they apply to all non-resident vehicles. EVs are generally unrestricted on Croatian roads.
EV benefits EVs have no current specific restrictions in Croatia. EV charging infrastructure is expanding along the Adriatic coast and motorways, with PETROL and HEP charging networks. Dubrovnik's cable car car park has EV chargers.

๐Ÿ’ณ Toll Roads & Vignettes

Toll booths on major motorways and bridges. ENC system available. Krk Bridge and Pag Bridge have separate tolls.

๐Ÿชง Road Signs to Know

While most European road signs follow international standards, these are the signs you are most likely to encounter โ€” and the ones that catch tourists off guard.

Must-Know Signs

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ
AC (Autocesta / Motorway)
Blue rectangular sign with AC prefix โ€” Croatia's motorway network. Toll booths (NAPLATNA POSTAJA) have lanes for cash, card, and ENC (transponder). Take a ticket at motorway entry and pay at exit.
โฌ‡๏ธ
Daj prednost prometu (Give Way)
Standard inverted red triangle โ€” yield to traffic on the main road. Very important on Croatian D-roads (national roads) where secondary roads join without clear markings.
๐Ÿšซ
Zabranjen ulaz (No Entry)
Standard red circle with white bar. Common at one-way street entries in Dubrovnik, Rovinj, Split old town, and other historic centres.
๐Ÿ’ก
Obvezno paljenje svjetala (Headlights Compulsory)
Blue headlight sign โ€” headlights must be on at all times when driving in Croatia, both day and night, year-round. This is a national legal requirement, not just a recommendation.
โš ๏ธ
Uska cesta (Narrow Road)
Warning triangle with two cars facing each other โ€” narrow road ahead, one-lane traffic possible. Common on sections of the Adriatic Highway (D8). You may need to give way to oncoming vehicles.

Country-Specific Signs

๐ŸŒŠ
Adriatic Highway Warning Signs
The D8 coastal road has specific rock-fall (falling stones) and sharp-bend warning signs. Take these seriously โ€” the road has unguarded cliff drops in sections and loose rock is common after rain.
๐Ÿ’ณ
Naplatna Postaja (Toll Plaza)
Blue overhead sign approaching toll booths. Lanes marked with green lights are open. The ENC lane (green transponder symbol) is for electronic payment users. Do not enter ENC lane without a transponder.
๐Ÿ™๏ธ
Zona Ograniฤenog Pristupa (Restricted Access Zone)
Seen at entrances to Dubrovnik Old Town and Split. Entry is restricted during peak hours for non-resident vehicles. Camera-enforced โ€” fines are issued automatically.

๐Ÿ“ท Speed Cameras

Advance Warning
Yes
Fine Range
From โ‚ฌ66
โ„น๏ธ Warning signs: Fixed cameras have advance warning signs (yellow triangle with a camera symbol). GPS speed camera warnings are legal in Croatia.

Camera Types in Croatia

  • ๐Ÿ“ทFixed cameras on motorways and major D-roads โ€” significantly expanded from 2023
  • ๐Ÿ“ทMobile units operated by MUP (Ministry of the Interior) โ€” common on Adriatic coastal roads in summer
  • ๐Ÿ“ทSection speed control (average speed) on some motorway stretches
  • ๐Ÿ“ทRadar guns at police checkpoints โ€” frequent during summer tourist season on coastal routes
Fine Details

From โ‚ฌ66 for minor excess. Serious excess (>50 km/h over limit) carries fines of โ‚ฌ600โ€“โ‚ฌ2,650 and immediate licence confiscation.

Croatia significantly increased both camera coverage and penalty levels from 2023 as part of EU road safety commitments. Summer tourist season sees intensive enforcement on Adriatic coastal roads. Drink driving is treated extremely seriously โ€” penalties are among the strictest in Europe.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Parking Signs & Zones

Understanding parking zones and road markings can save you a fine or a tow. Here is what each colour and sign means in Croatia.

Parking Zones Explained

Plava Zona (Blue Zone)

Paid parking in city centres โ€” pay at the parkomat (ticket machine) or via app. Display the ticket on your dashboard. Common in Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, ล ibenik, and Zagreb.

Zabrana parkiranja (No Parking)

Standard red circle no-parking sign. Yellow kerb markings also indicate no-parking zones. Enforcement is increasing in tourist areas โ€” do not risk it in summer.

Rezervirano (Reserved)

Reserved parking bays for residents (stanari), disabled drivers, or specific users. Do not park in reserved bays even briefly โ€” fines are issued quickly in tourist season.

Road Line Colours

Yellow kerb No parking
Blue lines or zone signs Paid parking zone โ€” pay before you leave the car
White lines Free parking โ€” always check nearby vertical signs for time limits
๐Ÿ“ฑ Parking apps: mParkEasyParkParkini (Dubrovnik)
๐Ÿ’ก Local tip: Dubrovnik's Old Town has virtually no tourist parking. Use the Gruz port area car park, the Ilijina Glavica cable car car park, or the park-and-ride at Dubrovnik bus station. In Split, the Sustipan and Brodarica car parks are closest to the Old Town. Expect to pay โ‚ฌ2โ€“4/hour in peak season.
