💡 Local Driving Tips

  • An IDP is required in Slovakia for US licence holders — Slovak police request it alongside your US state licence.
  • Purchase the electronic vignette (eznamka) online before entering Slovakian motorways — it is linked to your licence plate digitally. No sticker needed on the windscreen.
  • Zero alcohol tolerance applies — any detectable alcohol results in fines and possible criminal charges.
  • Bratislava is small but congested — the centre has a pedestrian zone. Use park-and-ride facilities outside the old town.
  • The High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) are beautiful — mountain roads require care and winter tyres are compulsory November to March.
  • When an emergency vehicle approaches, form a central corridor on motorways — pull left and right.

💳 Toll Roads & Vignettes

⚠ Motorway Vignette Required

A motorway vignette (diaľničná nálepka) is required for all vehicles on Slovakian motorways and expressways. Purchased electronically at eznamka.sk or at petrol stations. 10-day vignette costs €10, annual €50. Enforcement is by automatic number plate cameras — no physical sticker is placed on the windscreen.

Electronic vignette system (Eznamka). No physical sticker — purchase online at eznamka.sk or via the app. Enforced by cameras reading licence plates.

Understanding parking zones and road markings can save you a fine or a tow. Here is what each colour and sign means in Slovakia.

Parking Zones Explained

Paid parking zones in Bratislava, Košice, and other cities. Pay at machines (parkovací automat) or via the Zberatel or EasyPark apps.

Parkovisko (Car Park)

Multi-storey and surface car parks are well signposted in Bratislava. The Most SNP (UFO Bridge) area has a large car park near the old town.
